Moto XXX Public RelationsSummer Synopsis
Moto XXX a top 3 team in the AMA Nationals
When the AMA National series kicked off back in May, the outlook for Moto
XXX was uncertain. Kyle Lewis was just coming off of a wrist injury that
kept him completely out of action during the supercross series. Missing four
months of competition would be a huge setback for some riders, but Kyle and
the rest of the Moto XXX team showed impressive resilience and turned the
summer of ’03 into an unbelievable success.
While Lewis was racing his way back into shape, Larry Ward was riding out
front on his Honda CRF450R. "Big Bird" took up residence in the top ten and
was always a threat for the holeshot. Newcomer Clark Stiles started in the
points at Glen Helen and seemed to gain confidence with each lap. As the
summer progressed, he became a regular top 15 finisher. Lewis' start may
have been slow by his standards, but there were a lot of riders who would
have been willing to trade finishes with him. About halfway through the
series, he found his groove and started reeling off top ten finishes of his
own.
Despite having a few setbacks, the entire team kept working hard to
improve. With veterans like Ward and Lewis at the helm, work ethic was one
thing that could always be counted on. Now that the season is over, the
results speak for themselves. Larry Ward finished 9th in the 250 class and
first among privateers, as he did in the AMA Supercross series. Kyle Lewis
made up a lot of ground in the second half of the series and ended 12th in
the championship. Clark Stiles finished a commendable 14th in his first full
national campaign.
Compare Moto XXX's results with other squads and you begin to see where
the commitment pays off. Only two other teams—both of them factory—had three
riders finish in the top 15 in the 250 class. In other words, Moto XXX
outdid three of "The Big 5" factory teams this summer on privateer
equipment!
